Fancy Red

diamonds are among the most sought-after diamonds in the world. As with pink diamonds, scientists are still unsure of the cause of the red color. Research suggests that certain lattice defects are responsible for absorbing a particular range of wavelengths in the light spectrum. Red diamonds are so rare that only a handful have been found that exceed 5 carats. The "Moussaieff Red", discovered in 1990 and cut to 5.11 ct., is likely the largest known red diamond.
