Fancy Purple
diamonds are among the rarest natural diamonds. The primary causes of the purple color are lattice defects combined with nitrogen impurities and the resulting wavelength shift of a specific light band. Only a few purple diamonds exceed 2 carats in size. The largest known purple diamond, the "Royal Purple Heart", weighs only 7.34 ct. and is cut in a heart shape, its namesake, to best showcase the brilliance of its natural purple color.
