Fancy Blue

diamonds are among the rarest and most valuable diamonds. Their blue color is due to absorption of red light in the visible spectrum caused primarily by boron impurities, along with an extremely low nitrogen content, but also by hydrogen impurities or lattice defects. These impurities in the parts per billion (ppb) range have been found in the famous blue "Hope Diamond" with 360 boron atoms per 1 billion carbon atoms. Another unique feature of natural blue diamonds is their individual, varying red "phosphorescence" under UV radiation.
